Volunteer drivers assist the Minnesota AIDS Project's transportation program with providing deliveries from local food shelves and grocery stores. Volunteers are needed to provide at least one ride per month using your own car. Training is provided. This opportunity requires an extended application process including an interview, driver's license check, and criminal background check.

IDU Outreach
Volunteers assist syringe exchange staff during fixed-location exchange hours and outreach shifts. Outreach volunteers distribute safer sex kits, condoms, lube and materials, provide basic HIV risk reduction messages, and promote the Minnesota AIDS Project's HIV testing and outreach services. Familiarity and comfort working with communities impacted by HIV particularly active drug users is essential. Some activities may require a criminal background check and other screening procedures, however; a prior criminal record does not necessarily disqualify a volunteer from participation in these activities. To request an offline application form, call 612-373-9163.

Office & Clerical Support
Help support Minnesota AIDS Project staff during daytime hours with data entry, front desk reception, building and grounds maintenance, or other special projects. Both long-term and one-time opportunities may be available in different departments. Assignments involving contact with clients and/or sensitive information will require an interview and background check, however; a prior criminal record does not necessarily disqualify a volunteer from participation in these activities.

Prevention Program Recruiter
Volunteers help the Minnesota AIDS Project build our HIV prevention programs by recruiting participants to our programs and events. Recruiters are trained on MAP's prevention programs, such as CLEAR and SHIELD, and given communication tools to share information about these programs with their social networks, friends, and family. Volunteer recruiters help to stop the spread of HIV by connecting their peers with HIV prevention services. This exciting opportunity is perfect for people who want to make a difference in their community by providing resources to their peers.

The SHIELD program trains young gay and bisexual men (18-29 years old) who are current or former substance users to be Peer Educators who can share risk reduction information and resources with their communities in order to help them to be safer. The training program consists of six 90-minute group sessions conducted over three weeks. Pizza and soda are provided. Participants receive gift cards for each session they attend, and transportation assistance is also available.

Special Events
Special events such as the Minnesota AIDS Walk would not be possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers. There are a wide variety of ways to help with these events, both on event day and in the preceding weeks. When third-party fundraisers occur, Minnesota AIDS Project volunteers may also be needed to assist with logistics.

Tuesday & Thursday Nighters
On the second Tuesday of each month, volunteers meet at the Minnesota AIDS Project to help out with special projects. During busy events seasons, we also add a Thursday Nighter for those who cannot make it on Tuesdays. Our drop-in nights are a great way to help meet new friends, and learn more about what happens at the organization throughout the year.

Volunteer HIV Educator
The Minnesota AIDS Project offers an HIV Instructor Certification Course that prepares individuals to become Volunteer HIV Educators. MAP coordinates a volunteer speakers' bureau that provides Volunteer Educators the opportunity to provide in-person, group-level presentations that educate social service agencies, civic organizations, youth programs, colleges and other community groups. They also assist with tabling at health fairs and other community awareness events. The cost to attend the 2-day HIV Instructor Certification Course is $75. A limited number of partial scholarships are available. Volunteers must be at least 17 years of age for this opportunity.
