Volunteer FAQ
- What do volunteers do?
- Volunteers can choose from a wide variety of tasks to help us on Walk Day. These include:
Muscle Crews: Lifting and hauling, building the park and route infrastructure, and teardown.
Sponsorship Fulfillment: Decorating the park and route with balloons and install signage to recognize our supporters.
Guest Hospitality: Greeting, thanking, cheering on, and assisting volunteers at park activity stations and along the route.
Registration and Boutique: Assisting walkers and runners with turning in their money and receiving their prizes.
- What times am I able to volunteer?
- Walk Day assignments are typically 3 - 4 hours long and range from the evening before the walk to early morning, mid-morning, and afternoon shifts. The latest volunteer shift ends around 3:30pm. Volunteers can choose assignments that allow them to also participate as walkers and runners.
- What is the minimum age to volunteer?
- Youth between the ages of 12 and 16 can volunteer in the park or along the route with supervision from an accompanying adult. Registration volunteers must be at least 16. Unfortunately we cannot include volunteers younger than age 12.
- What is the training requirement to volunteer for the Walk or Run?
- We provide an online basic training for you to download. Additionally, when you sign up you’ll be invited to drop in for a pre-event orientation, where you’ll receive your volunteer t-shirt, meet your crew leaders, have a chance to ask in-person questions about your assignment, and become more inspired to support MAP! Not being able to attend the drop-in day will not disqualify you from volunteering. However, we ask that you come in to retrieve your t-shirt and talk with the Volunteer Coordinator before Walk Day.
- Can groups volunteer for the Walk and Run?
- Some areas of the Walk and Run require many volunteers, and others just a few. Among the options available, be sure to note where more volunteers are needed. We can easily assign a group to areas needing more help! And, when you sign up, be sure to type in your group and the number of participants, so we can include you in the same area.
