Education for Life

Education for Life (EFL) is an employment training program for individuals who are HIV-positive. The program is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Human Services HIV/AIDS Division in partnership with PPL and the Minnesota Work Incentives Connection. EFL participants can assess job skills, strengthen technology abilities, and explore career change options. Classes are Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. for 5 weeks. Participants receive a stipend upon completion.  EFL also assists with job searches, resumes, applications and interviewing skills. They also provide workshops to community members seeking return-to-work skills who do not have time to attend a full class.

EFL is hosting 4 Minneapolis classes in 2010. The next class starts on March 22, 2010 and space is currently available. EFL has also expanded into Greater Minnesota with a class in Duluth on April 26-30, 2010.

The Project for Pride in Living (PPL) Learning Center, where EFL is housed, has expanded its walk in and graduate services. The PPL Learning Center has a wide range of “next step” training programs available to EFL graduates or general community members.

Open Arms of Minnesota is Moving

Open Arms of Minnesota prepares and delivers meals to those living with HIV and other chronic illnesses in the Twin Cities Metro Area. The meals are designed to meet the specific nutritional needs of each client. They also supply meals for family members, partners and caregivers in the same household.

Open Arms of Minnesota is expanding their services and the number of meals they deliver. In order to keep up with demand, they are transitioning to a building with a bigger kitchen and more storage space. Open Arms will be relocating to 25th Street East and Bloomington Avenue South. Meal services through Open Arms will not change.

The organization is working on some possible new programs such as menus tailored to the needs of people with diabetes, and incorporating traditional dishes of Central and South America to appeal to Latino clients.

To learn more about the services offered through Open Arms of Minnesota call 612-872-1152 or go to www.openarmsmn.org.
