AIDSLine Update - February 2nd, 2009

AIDSLine Live Viewing of the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI)

The Minnesota AIDS Project (MAP) AIDSLine is proud to announce it is hosting a live Web cast of Treatment Update 2009 from Montreal. This Web cast will be held on February 11 from 6 to 8 PM. This event is open to providers, consumers and general community members. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to the MAP AIDSLine at 612-373-2437 as light refreshments will be served.

CROI is the pre-eminent annual international conference on HIV/AIDS. It is a scientifically focused meeting of the worlds leading researchers working to understand, prevent, and treat HIV/AIDS and its related complications. The annual conference provides a forum for translating laboratory and clinical research into medical applications. This year the conference is expected to draw over 3,800 leading researchers from all over the world.

The Treatment Update Web cast is a series of panel discussions surrounding the significant findings and presentations at the CROI. The Update panelists will discuss what they believe to be the most important works from CROI that might translate into clinical care for people living with HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis C. The program will include excerpts of interviews with some of the leading scientists in the world and includes the following segments: Antiviral Treatments, Metabolic Issues, Side Effects and Hepatitis Issues.

RENT Performance to Benefit the Minnesota AIDS Project

The students of Main Street School of Performing Arts will take the stage in February to perform the highly acclaimed musical Rent, becoming the first high school in the Midwest to perform this Tony Award-winning show. Main Street School is a tuition-free, charter high school located in the heart of downtown Hopkins, and is open to all high school students throughout the metro area. Through the creation and performance of theatre, music, and dance, learners will establish their unique personal signature. Rigorous academics and collaboration with professional artists will prepare learners for higher education and lifelong engagement in the arts.

The February 25th performance will be a benefit for the Minnesota AIDS Project. All proceeds for the evening will benefit the organization.  The performances on February 19th and 28th will feature "Talk Back" discussions with MAP AIDSLine Community Educators after the performance.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical by composer-lyricist-librettist Jonathan Larson concerns a group of bohemians who fall in and out of love in the age of AIDS. It addresses issues facing its gay, straight and bi-sexual characters; HIV infection, and free expression at "the end of the millennium" in the 1990s. The adaptation has been done to retain the dramatic intent of the rock musical, and includes some changes in language to make it possible for many schools to perform this piece.
