Attorney
Attorneys and law students are needed to assist with a variety of legal issues.

Communications Internship Interns contribute to writing and editing articles for external publications; write press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, and calendar advisories; follow up written media materials to secure placement in print and broadcast media outlets; support online communications efforts including social networking outreach; develop and maintain MAP's media contact list; participate in special event planning and implementation; and perform other duties as assigned. Candidates must have completed at least two years of college with a demonstrable emphasis in communications, public relations, journalism or English coursework. Candidates should possess strong writing skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Opportunities are available on an ongoing basis, but this internship requires a minimum 12-week commitment. Scheduling is flexible but must complete a minimum of 15 hours per week.
Community Education Internship Interns assist with staffing the MAP AIDSLine and would receive full training to be able to answer phones as staff educators. A primary responsibility would be to learn the HIV service system and make appropriate referrals. Additionally, interns will be given comprehensive HIV education to fully understand HIV transmission and do accurate, nonjudgmental HIV risk assessments. Interns would be given opportunities to shadow face-to-face appointments with staff and based on skill level deliver these appointments later in the placement. Interns will be expected to assist with tabling and HIV 101 presentations as requested and appropriate in various settings. Other responsibilities include helping to oversee the MAP Web site's education and referral services. Preferred candidates should be in the junior or senior year of a social work or human services degree program. The internship requires a minimum 4 month commitment. Scheduling requires a minimum of 8 hours per week.
Development & Events Internships Interns assist with planning and logistics for the Minnesota AIDS Walk and supporting activities; developing sponsorship leads and relationships; communicating enthusiastically with event participants and volunteers; and brainstorming innovative ways to increase profitability of events by raising revenues or reducing expenses. Ideal candidates would need to be available for the Fall, Spring, or Summer Semester. Scheduling is flexible but requires a minimum commitment of 15 - 20 hours per week.
HIV Prevention Internship Interns assist with coordinating and conducting field-based and internet community outreach, recruiting for and marketing educational and social networking events, print, web and electronic publishing, and community action. Candidates preferably have completed college coursework in public or community health, community organizing, education, or related fields. Equivalent experiences in a work or volunteer capacity would also merit consideration. Familiarity and comfort working with communities impacted by HIV particularly gay and bisexual men and drug users is essential. The internship requires a minimum one semester or 12 week commitment. Scheduling is flexible but requires a minimum of 15 hours per week.
IDU Outreach Volunteers assist syringe exchange staff during fixed-location exchange hours and outreach shifts. Outreach volunteers hand out safer sex kits, condoms, lube and materials, provide basic HIV risk reduction messages, and promote MAP's HIV testing and outreach services. Volunteers may also conduct exchanges of used syringes for new sterile syringes and other safer injecting materials, enroll new clients, hand out safer sex kits, condoms, lube and materials, provide basic HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV) risk reduction messages, and encourage HIV and HCV screening and testing with syringe exchange clients. Some activities may require a criminal background check and other screening procedures, however; a prior criminal record does not necessarily disqualify a volunteer from participation in these activities.
Office & Clerical Support Help support MAP staff during daytime hours with data entry, front desk reception, building and grounds maintenance, or other special projects. Both long-term and one-time opportunities may be available in different departments. Certain assignments may require an interview and background check.
PrideAlive PrideAlive is a program of gay and bisexual men working together to stop the spread of HIV and STDs by creating and sustaining a healthy sexual community. We empower individuals to participate in their health through educational, social, political, and civic involvement.
PrideAlive ASL Interpreter Volunteer ASL interpreters need to have a comfort level with sexual health language particularly as it relates to gay and bisexual men. Games, exercises, and discussions often contain slang references as well as biological terms related to safer sex, sexually transmitted diseases, and negotiating safer sex. ASL students, as well as certified interpreters, are encouraged to volunteer. For additional information, contact Cathy Strobel at cstrobel@mnaidsproject.org or by phone at 612-373-2452.
Special Events Special events such as the Minnesota AIDS Walk would not be possible without the help of hundreds of volunteers. There are a wide variety of ways to help with these events, both on event day and in the preceding weeks. When third-party fundraisers occur, MAP volunteers may also be needed to assist with logistics.
Tuesday & Thursday Nighters On the second Tuesday of each month, volunteers meet at MAP to help out with special projects. During busy events seasons, we also add a Thursday Nighter for those who cannot make it on Tuesdays. Our drop-in nights are a great way to help MAP, meet new friends, and learn more about what happens throughout the year.
Volunteer HIV Educator Volunteer educators provide in-person, group-level trainings that educate employers, educators, service organizations, and civic groups who work with those affected by HIV. They also assist with tabling events and other special opportunities. To become a Volunteer HIV Educator you must complete a MAP-Red Cross Instructor Training or have a current Red Cross HIV Instructor certification. Volunteers must be at least 17 years of age for this opportunity.
